ICDC College announced today that it has expanded its curriculum to include a continuing education course designed to provide advanced education for security officers and loss prevention professionals interested in furthering their career in loss prevention management. The four-hour online course is approved and recognized by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs (Provider #PCE 5037), and the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (Provider #17023).

The course covers important topics, including: shrinkage, the criminal and civil aspects of shoplifting, the criminal mind and motivation behind stealing, monitoring and observing customers who handle merchandise, basic investigation techniques, how to process shoplifters, and law and liability in the retail environment.

“Senior retail management relies upon trained security and loss prevention associates, agents and managers who understand how to identify and reduce inventory losses initiated through employee and vendor theft, fraud, shoplifting and accounting errors,” said ICDC College’s Director of Employer Relations. “This course is designed for security officers and loss prevention professionals who work for large or small retailers such as, department stores, supermarkets, boutiques, warehouses and convenient stores.”

Beyond immediate theft, however, loss prevention encompasses an overall benefit to companies.

“ICDC College also understands the need for employers to not only have trained loss prevention specialists, but to also develop standard operating procedures to reduce potential damage to a company’s reputation and insurance costs, while avoiding potential litigation and liability associated with theft in any form,” said ICDC College’s Vice President of Business Operations and Strategy.

Captain Paul Chappell grew up in Alabama, the son of a half-white, half-African American father and Korean mother. His father was born in 1925, a man who grew up in Virginia under segregation who later served in both the Korean and Vietnam War before retiring from military service. As a son of a veteran, Chappell grew up understanding the trials, dedication and sacrifices that soldiers make to defend and protect our country.

Chappell decided to pursue a military career of his own, entering the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduating in 2002. At West Point, Cadet Chappell was exposed to not only a rigorous military training program, but came to understand the ideals of war, its limitations, liabilities and uncertainty. It was here that Chappell learned that war is not inevitable, but is an act that should be engaged in only as a last option. While training to become an officer in the United States Army, Chappell began to question and examine methods other than war that could help resolve conflict with others.

Upon leaving West Point, Chappell was stationed at Fort Bliss, El Paso Texas and was deployed to Iraq in 2006 as a captain. He completed his military service in 2009. Military life appealed to him. The Army taught him about respect and selfless services to others; a community of men and women that would die for each other, and an environment where selflessness is valued and greed is uncommon. These principles continued to shape his views about the best ways humans can and should interact with each other to live peacefully.

When most people talk to a soldier who has returned from war, many will want to know whether he or she engaged in combat, or whether the war(s) in which he/she served was justified in his/her opinion. It’s not often that a civilian asks a returning soldier the steps that he or she would take to end war, as if by asking, you may be questioning the veteran’s patriotism to his or her country especially during a time of war. But, Chappell will give you an answer, because his primary mission as a former soldier is just that, talking about the necessity of ending war and waging peace through methods that don’t necessarily involve using violence against one’s opponents. In fact, Chappell wrote his first book, Will War Ever End? A Soldier’s Vision of Peace for the 21st Century, while he was still an active-duty officer, a peace warrior in uniform.

His next book, The End of War: How Waging Peace Can Save Humanity, Our Plant and Our Future is considered a timeless masterpiece by some reviewers. Chappell challenges the myths used to support war, such as the misconception that human beings are naturally violent and that war makes our nation safer, while also examining the other root causes of war, such as greed and fear. The book also examines the traumatic effects of war as a way to enlighten and encourage readers to both nurture and embrace all roads leading to peace and non-violence as a means of ending terrorism. In his most recent book, Peaceful Revolution: How We Can Create the Future Needed for Humanity’s Survival, Chappell lets us know that world peace is possible if all of us take the time to earnestly examine the true nature of humanity and develop a strategic and disciplined plan to wage peace in the 21st century. Chappell says, ”We can talk about how tragic war is, but unless we question its underlying assumptions and challenge its prevailing myths, war will continue. A peaceful revolution that dispels the myths of war while lifting our perception of humanity to new heights is crucial.”

As our nation celebrated Black History Month earlier this year, Chappell reminds us once again that Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) was also an agent of peace who tackled the injustices of racism through non-violent methods to become the champion of civil rights for all. He considers MLK a leading peace warrior of his time, whose peaceful methods make us spiritual descendants of his legacy. “Here is a man who confronted economic injustice, the Vietnam war and American intervention overseas, who focused on social issues, corporate greed, and lack of fairness in the workplace without a thread of violence,” he said. “If you read Dr. King’s quotes they are still relevant to the challenges our country is still facing today.”

Chappell is a man that not only makes us thankful and appreciative of his military service, but also helps us to challenge what we’ve been taught not only about war in general, but to examine the deficiencies in our truly understanding what world peace is all about. He encourages us to pursue peace with utmost urgency and passion, and to ignite our own peaceful revolution.

Last December, Lt. Gen. Patricia D. Horoho, became the Army’s 43rd Surgeon General. She succeeds Lt. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker, who retired in January 2012. To obtain this post, she was nominated by President Barack Obama, and approved by the U.S. Senate.

“We are dedicated to identifying and caring for those Soldiers who have sustained psychological and physical trauma associated with an Army engaged in a protracted war,” she said, adding that the war fighter does not stand alone.

In a recent ceremony at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Horoho was promoted to lieutenant general and was sworn in as the Army’s top medical officer.

As Army surgeon general, Horoho is now in charge of one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States. This system is comprised of over 480 facilities and 29 executive agencies, with a yearly budget of $13.5 billion. Horoho will oversee 140,000 military and civilian employees.

The Army surgeon general’s impact, said Odierno, extends far beyond the Army to the national and the international level, collaboration and partnership with other public and private entities on research, standards of practices, national leadership in areas such as brain injury, concussive disorders, mental health promotion and pain management.

Horoho has 28 years of experience and education, and has commanded the Army Nurse Corps since 2008. At that time, she was given an unusual two-grade promotion from colonel to major general.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina, and her first master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She also earned a second Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

In her long and varied military career, Hororo also includes these achievements:

chief nurse and hospital commander of a 500-bed field hospital, 249th General Hospital, Fort Gordon, Ga.;

assistant branch chief, Army Nurse Corps Branch, United States Total Army Personnel Command, Alexandria, Va.;

assistant deputy for Healthcare Management Policy in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs), Pentagon, Washington, D.C.;

deputy commander for nursing and commander of the DeWitt Health Care Network, Fort Belvoir, Va.;

deputy commander for nursing, Walter Reed Army Medical Center and North Atlantic Regional Medical Command, Washington, D.C.

She also received recognition as one of the top 100 nurses in North Carolina in 1993. And, she was also chosen as Fort Bragg’s supervisor of the year at that time. Horoho was also honored by Time Life Publications for her activities at the Pentagon on 9/11.

And though many female veterans continue to make a contribution to this country every day, Horoho will make it her agenda to ensure their health and happiness.

ICDC College and America ICARE Foundation, a new non-profit organization whose mission is to provide caring, ongoing support for military personnel and their families, joined forces this month with the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots Foundation to help make the season a little brighter for military children in need.

Together, the two organizations rolled out a special two-month holiday campaign over the months of November and December that will provide hundreds of toys to children who might not otherwise get presents for the holiday season. ICDC College’s four campuses in Hollywood, Huntington Park, Van Nuys, South Bay and its corporate office located in Culver City were collection centers for all the toys. The toys were collected on December 16th and will be distributed at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base in time for Christmas.

Toys for Tots have helped bring holiday cheer to millions of disadvantaged children since its inception in 1947. At that time, Major Bill Hendricks and a number of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles distributed over 5,000 toys to needy children. Shortly thereafter, a national campaign was underway, and in 1995 the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official campaign of the U.S. Marines Corps and mission of the Marines Corps Reserve.

U.S. Marines Staff Sargent Angel Cotto says he is thrilled that ICDC College and America ICARE made this holiday a happier one for those in need. Last year, the Toys for Tots campaign collected more than 83,000 toys for poverty-stricken children in the Orange County/Los Angeles region.

“We encouraged everyone to help us collect more toys this holiday season than we ever did before,” says Staff Sgt. Cotto. “Marines will be distributing toys donated by many organizations—all for children living in poverty. We want to make sure we put a smile on each kid’s face!”

Eric Rubenstein, an America ICARE board member, was pleased that his organization could partner with ICDC College for this special effort to benefit military children. “Our participation in the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots campaign is timely, because the troops are returning home,” says Rubenstein. “Especially now, military families are in need of services such as those provided by Toys for Tots year after year.”

Main Campus in Huntington Park and Online Division will offer an International Curriculum consisting of the following Core Competencies: Criminal Justice, Security and Law, Psychology and Counseling, Business and Finance and Healthcare Management

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 20, 2011

ICDC College’s international division now offers foreign students the ability to pursue an American education both online and at the college’s Main Campus in Huntington Park, California. The international division will launch an “ICDC College Educational World Tour” that will expand the college’s global reach into Canada, Latin America and Europe over the next few months.

ICDC College’s Director of Global Development states, “ICDC College’s global expansion provides our institution an excellent opportunity to offer international students a high-quality American education and fulfill their life-long dream; to study abroad in the U.S. in careers with potential world-wide impact.”

The “ICDC College Educational World Tour” will launch in Brazil where ICDC College will join a number of educators, represented from countries such as Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States at the 19th annual FPP Edu-Media International Education Brazil Expo on September 20 – 21, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro. ICDC College’s visit to Brazil is timely due to a number of recent published reports that Latin American countries are encouraging more students to study abroad, especially due to the popularity of pursuing advanced studies in the United States.

“Traditionally, Brazil sends many students to study at educational institutions in the United States. ICDC College’s unique degree and vocational programs will resonate with people in Brazil and will provide yet another option for those individuals seeking higher education,” says ICDC College’s Director of Global Development.

Mary Price, a graduate of ICDC College’s Alcohol and Drug Counseling program, is featured in the September 2011 issue of Woman’s Day Magazine, on newsstands across the country. Woman’s Day selected six women between the ages of 38-69 years of age to profile; women who changed their lives after overcoming serious life challenges and in the process found a new sense of overall purpose and satisfaction. A resident of Bellflower, California, and a high school graduate, Ms. Price decided to go back to school at the age of 69 to become a qualified substance abuse counselor. She completed her training at ICDC College’s Huntington Park campus and ICDC helped her get a job at a treatment facility in Los Angeles, California.

After raising her six children, Ms. Price, who had no prior history of alcohol or drug use, became addicted to drugs during her 40′s. She became a “functional addict”, hiding an addiction that went undetected by her employer and family members. Three days after the fateful day of September 11, 2001, Ms. Price decided to turn herself around, and checked herself into a residential treatment facility to start her road to recovery. After celebrating almost nine years of sobriety, Ms. Price decided to enroll in ICDC College’s Alcohol and Drug Counseling program to help others get clean and sober and live their lives more purposefully.

“It is challenging for a woman of my age to decide to go back to school and change careers, so it took a lot of determination and it wasn’t always easy,” says Ms. Price. “With the help of ICDC College, I was able to further my education and start a new career as a substance abuse counselor; a profession where I can use my training and personal experiences to help change people’s lives.”

Through ICDC College’s Career Services Department, Ms. Price completed her externship at Bernie’s Lil Women’s Center in South Central Los Angeles and was later hired there as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Bernie’s Lil Women’s Center is a treatment facility established in 2004 by Ms. Bernie Goudeau, a registered nurse for over 30 years, who decided to start a center to help pregnant women overcome their addiction and deliver their babies drug-free and sober.

The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) has announced that ICDC College’s South Bay Campus received the 2010-2011 ACCSC School of Excellence Award. The School of Excellence designation is the highest-level of achievement given to those ACCSC-accredited institutions that meet or exceed the expectations and rigors of the commission in regards to the standards of accreditation, along with graduation and employment rates. It also recognizes a school’s commitment to delivering high quality education to its students. This achievement elevates ICDC College to a very select group of schools which have received honors of excellence and/or distinction from the ACCSC for all of their campus locations. In 2010, the ACCSC bestowed this honor upon only 9 of its 800 post-secondary institutions across the United States.

During last year’s ACCSC awards ceremony in Philadelphia, PA, ICDC College received three prestigious awards in two separate categories: the 2009-2010 School of Distinction for its Hollywood and Huntington Park campuses, and the 2009-2010 Graduate of the Year. Vickie Knight, a 59-year-old graduate of the Alcohol and Drug Counseling program at the Hollywood campus, received the Graduate of the Year award. Ms. Knight had completed her Alcohol and Drug Counseling certificate at ICDC College while living in a homeless shelter in downtown Los Angeles. At the ACCSC award ceremony held at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia, Ms. Knight received a standing ovation for her outstanding scholastic achievement, leadership and perseverance in completing her certificate while facing extreme personal adversity.

Alistair Curamen, ICDC College South Bay Campus Director, will receive the 2010-2011 School of Excellence award at ACCSC’s fifth annual Professional Development Conference to be held on September 19-21 in Long Beach, California. The theme of the conference, “A Community of Partners in Education” will highlight partnership building within the higher education community. Upon receiving the notification letter from ACCSC announcing that his campus would receive the School of Excellence award, Mr. Curamen said, “We are truly honored to receive the ACCSC School of Excellence award, and on behalf of the entire South Bay campus, I affirm that ICDC College will continue to uphold our commitment to providing quality education to every student who comes through our doors. We are committed to operating in the utmost good faith and integrity at every level of our organization, and we are proud to be an accredited institution of the ACCSC.”

“The goal of our association is to help ease a veteran’s transition from active military service to a civilian classroom environment so they can maximize their personal, educational and career goals.”

ICDC College’s Department of Veterans and Military Affairs has formed a Military/Veterans Student Association (MVSA) – a volunteer student-run organization established to provide its members with the opportunity to support veterans, military personnel and their families. ICDC College’s MVSA is a chapter of the national Student Veterans of America (SVA), which provides military veterans with the support and advocacy needed to obtain a higher education and the resources needed to successfully transition into civilian life after military service. As an SVA member chapter, ICDC College is included in a number of student veterans groups at colleges and universities across the United States. These groups provide peer-to-peer support, networking opportunities and community activities for their veteran student populations.

ICDC College recognized the need to establish the MVSA at ICDC as a forum for providing support to those who have served our country. “The goal of our association is to help ease a veteran’s transition from active military service to a civilian classroom environment so they can maximize their personal, educational and career goals. ICDC understands the unique cultural challenges military personnel face during this adjustment and retraining period,” says ICDC College’s Director of Military/Veteran Admissions.
