Throughout February of 2012, ICDC College’s Hollywood Main Campus recognized the Black and African-American population by celebrating Black History Month. The campus honored the holiday with a corkboard full of iconic Black Americans’ pictures and mini biographies on display.

The poster – prominently placed in the campus halls – was divided into six categories: Athletes, Inventors, Scholars, Civil Rights Leaders, Political Leaders, and Entertainers. Some of the more recognizable faces who donned the large poster were: Martin Luther King, Jr., Bill Cosby, Condoleeza Rice, Maya Angelou, Malcom X, and President Barack Obama.

A sense of pride was felt among the students and staff who honored the many men and women who have made a movement toward equality in a country that was once divided on the topic of race.

And even though February is over, the educational yet uplifting poster board will remain there a few days longer to remind us that history as rich as this does not need to be confined to a month, but should be remembered all year long.

ICDC College sits down for an interview with Romeo Miller to talk about the importance of a college education, meeting ICDC students, saluting our veterans and more.

Romeo, many people don’t realize this, but you have been an advocate for individuals pursuing college education for a number of years. Can you elaborate on that please?

You’re absolutely right. My parents instilled in me the value of getting a college degree when I was young. In fact my father, Master P, used to make me wear a sign around my neck stating “You will go to college” and that was prophetic. It instilled a core value in me that getting an education is very important and a goal that everyone should pursue.

What was it like working with ICDC College on a Back to School campaign to encourage more people to go back to school?

I have been very grateful for this special opportunity to work with ICDC because this is a college which is about the ICDC “C C & C,” which means ICDC is about providing people with career choices, a school which cares and which gives back to the community. Here is a school that gives students the opportunity to get trained in a variety of fields that definitely can make a difference out here whether you live in South Central LA or Bel Air. For example, the health care field is not going away. Our communities need great paralegals, future lawyers. Business management is another great field. Hey, I can tell you, the entertainment industry alone needs great people trained in accounting, business, that’s a fact. The list goes on and on. I mean whatever your flavor, ICDC seems to have it.

You got a chance to actually visit the campuses, to go into the classrooms for a first-hand look. Tell us about it.

Yes, in addition to meeting many great students, I got a chance to actually go into the classrooms, and meet the instructors; individuals who are passionate about their students and the programs they teach. In fact the everyday life experience which each of these instructors bring to their individual classrooms is incredible. I’ve always said, we all need to be passionate about something. At ICDC you see that passion every day in the way the instructors go about teaching their students. I guarantee you, when the students graduate they’ll remember each of the instructors who enriched their lives. That’s real.

Tell us about spending Veterans Day last month with ICDC College. You visited all four campuses right?

Yes, I call it the “ICDC World Tour!” [He laughs] I really enjoyed meeting all the students, faculty, staff, family members and friends. I also got to take pictures with the veterans and hang out with Homeland Security students and instructors who have actually served our country. I take the sacrifices that our veterans and service members have given to our country very seriously, so it was nice to visit ICDC on that special day. I try to thank a veteran every time I get the opportunity to meet one and learn a little more about what they went through to make our nation safe.

You gave a special story to the students while on the ICDC World Tour. Can you share it with our readers?

I told them that all my talk about the importance of getting an education is for a very personal reason. I had a cousin who decided to skip school one day, and because of that one decision on that particular day, he lost his life – he was murdered. Had my cousin not decided to skip class that day, he would be here with me today.

You shared a lot of special quotes on that day, here’s a few of them that our students said really made an impact on them. Are you ready for the “Romeo-isms,” a sort of ICDC World tour play back or re-mix?

Yeah. Hit me. [He laughs]

“With an education anything is possible.”

“Education is very important, it helped me change my life, and it helped save my life.”

“I’m here to inspire you to go out and get a better life.”

“The economy is struggling, [so get an education], because anything is possible.”

“It’s never too late to get an education.”

“God will never give you anything you cannot handle.”

“I believe God gives everybody a talent and gift, so [whatever yours is] go out and do all of it!”

I meant every word.

The Romeo ICDC rap song is quite a hit, I mean it’s catchy, “I’m so ICDC College.” Rumor has it that you came up with that whole rap in less than an hour. Did I hear that correctly?”

That’s true. A lot of people sing it back to me when I’m out and about!

You are quite active in the community giving back to inner city youth in a number of efforts. You offer a nice eclectic mix of education and fitness when working with young people today. Tell us more.

My family and I are involved in a number of community efforts that combine health improvement with education. We supported our nation’s First Lady in helping to raise awareness for childhood obesity by getting involved in a health campaign called “Fatten Our Brains Not Our Bodies.” My father and I reached out to South Central LA elementary school children in Los Angeles to encourage them to read and helped inspire a middle school to pursue higher grades by giving them computers. I love giving back. I could go on and on.

Everyone talks about your latest movies, songs and projects, but here’s some trivia that our readers might not know – You and your father, Master P were honored with a Certificate of Special Recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives for your work in the community. And, you both gave back recently to the residents of New Orleans for Thanksgiving, by giving away free turkeys.

Yep, yep. That meant a lot. Yes, my family is from Louisiana, so to be able to take part in this effort really leaves a special imprint in my heart.

You’re a busy man Romeo, making movies, and leading roles I might add. You’re a recording artist, community activist, an entrepreneur, with your special clothing line, College Boyys; a high-fashion affordable brand with an urban look and feel to the community. How do you manage to handle it all?

I have a great support system in my family, my belief in God, I eat right and I work out. I believe in surrounding myself with positive people who are going places and help me want to achieve greater heights. Also, I have the spirit of my father, who raised me and all of my siblings to stay grounded, and to always give back to those less fortunate and in need.”

Thanks Romeo. All of us here at ICDC appreciate the time you took out of your busy schedule to visit with us and to speak to me now.

Thank you. I enjoyed it too. Peace.

Toys, toys and more toys abounded at the ICDC College corporate office today, December 17, 2011, marking the end of a special holiday campaign to collect new gifts for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation.

Anyone driving or walking past Sepulveda Blvd. in Culver City today would have seen the hundreds upon hundreds of toys lined up in special boxes in front of ICDC College’s corporate office. ICDC College’s students, faculty and administrative staff from the Hollywood, Huntington Park, Van Nuys, South Bay and Online campuses started collecting toys as early as November to make sure that children would have the gifts in time for Christmas!

For this special effort, ICDC College joined forces with America ICARE Foundation™ to help make the season a little brighter for military children in need. America ICARE™ is a new non-profit organization whose mission is to provide caring, ongoing support for military personnel and their families.

Corporal Aguilar and Corporal Clifton from Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base brought a van to pick up the abundant array of new, unwrapped toys that included dolls, board games, teddy bears, jump ropes, hula hoops, basketballs, footballs, and even new clothes!

Corporal Aguilar said, “Because of the help from America ICARE™ and ICDC College, we were able to pick up hundreds of toys from all of their campuses and corporate office today. It’s a wonderful thing when community partners can come together to help support the many children in need.”

Be a hero this year by participating in the 2011 Toys-for-Tots® drive that takes place at all five campuses of ICDC College. From now until December 16, 2011 you can bring any brand-new, unwrapped toy to any of our locations and put a smile on some child’s face this holiday season. We will be accepting donations of unwrapped toys for children in Southern California – ages 3 to 16.

As an organization which is also committed to helping children in need, ICDC College is launching its first annual campaign to support Toys for Tots®. America ICARE, a new non-profit foundation, will also join this effort.

“This holiday season – for the first time ever – we’re excited to be supporting the Marines Toys for Tots Foundation,” said the Director of Military/Veteran Outreach and Support at ICDC College. “To help spread holiday cheer, ICDC College employees and students are stepping into the role of Santa to make certain that more children in need will be able to have a gift.”

During the last week of November, Marines made special appearances at ICDC College and America ICARE offices to build awareness about the Toys for Tots campaign in Los Angeles and Orange County. All toys collected will be distributed to children in and around the communities in which they are donated, making this a local effort in Southern California.

According to an analysis of recent U.S. Census data, one in four young children in the United States lives in poverty. The poverty rate among children reflects that of adults, who are experiencing high unemployment and sluggish income increases. Just last week, the Census Bureau announced that over 46 million Americans were impoverished during 2010 – that’s the most since the agency began tracking poverty about 50 years ago.

U.S. Marines Staff Sergeant Angel Cotto says he is thrilled that ICDC College and America ICARE will be doing their part to make this holiday a happier one for those in need. Last year, the Toys for Tots campaign collected more than 83,000 toys for poverty-stricken children in the Orange County/Los Angeles region.

“We encourage everyone to help us collect more toys this holiday season than we ever did before,” says Staff Sgt. Cotto. “Marines will be distributing toys donated by many organizations – all for children living in poverty. We want to make sure we put a smile on each kid’s face!”

To experience the pleasure of giving up-close, you’re invited to attend the Toys for Tots local event sponsored by the City of Los Alamitos Fine Arts & Cultural Affairs Commission.

When: Dec. 20, 21 and 22
Time: 7:30 am – 3:00 pm
Where: 4122 Saratoga Ave., Building #20, Los Alamitos, CA. 90720

As a GI Jobs’ “Military Friendly School” in 2011 and 2010, ICDC College aims to collect hundreds of toys in its first year of involvement with the Marines Toys for Tots Foundation. To learn more about the many ways ICDC College and America ICARE are helping our military families, visit http://americaicare.org and http://icdccollege.edu/.

Reminder: It’s “Safe Toys and Gifts Month,” so be sure the toys don’t have sharp edges or anything a young child might choke on.

What partners well with good grades and perfect attendance? Breakfast of course. And on November 4th, 2011, that’s exactly what ICDC College’s Hollywood Campus offered to celebrate the achievement of their students. The “Breakfast with the President” event celebrated a group full of motivated students who demonstrated good grades, perfect attendance and overall achievement in the last month.

Coffee and juice were available to drink and students could nosh on bagels, cream cheese, muffins and fruit as they listened to their campus president give them a warm and uplifting speech about how proud she was of each student. The Career Services department also gave a few celebratory words to all those students who attended.

To be invited to the breakfast, students must have a GPA higher than a 97% and must have perfect attendance. At the breakfast where will receive a certificate for their achievements. Last month was the Hollywood Campus’s first month hosting a breakfast and this month they saw a 40% increase in attendees.

“The breakfast is a good way to motivate our students, giving them a chance to celebrate their achievements and socialize with their faculty and staff. I am proud of these students and hope that more make the list next month,” says Hollywood Campus President.

Partaking in the most important meal of the day never tasted so good, than at ICDC College’s Hollywood Breakfast with the President.

They say that giving is better than receiving, and for five ICDC College massage therapist graduates who work at the Massage Company of Brentwood, nothing could be truer. With a working environment that includes support and care from each other, employees at Massage Company of Brentwood find the relief that most people find in them.

Jackie Aguilar, Joshua Weiss and Tineka Gradford are just a few ICDC College graduates who work at the Massage Company. Together they make a diverse and compassionate team that gives patients the care their bodies crave – a healing touch.

Sheila Castro – the owner of the Massage Company of Brentwood and a massage therapist herself – not only appreciates the combination of skills her ICDC College graduates bring to the massage table, but also promotes that they teach each other what they know.

“What’s cool about working here, besides getting to help people feel better, is that we get to learn from each other. Sheila shows us new techniques and sometimes we’ll show her what we know too,” says ICDC College alum Joshua Weiss.

The Massage Company offers a multitude of different kinds of massages ranging from Swedish to Deep Tissue to Prenatal treatments. Therapists accept walk-ins, appointments, full hour or half-hour treatments, customized differently for each patient. Surely this inviting energy comes from the positivity and synergy this group has with one another.

“I love working here because my boss is very nice and understanding of our situations in life. Plus the environment around here is very positive and caring,” says ICDC College graduate Jackie Aguilar.

Likewise, Sheila Castro, feels that ICDC College’s well-prepared graduates give her the stress relief she needs to run a successful business.

“ICDC College graduates understand the business and exhibit patience,” says Castro. “We are a team of smooth, easy going people who are goal-oriented and self-motivated.” But Castro’s enthusiasm for ICDC College didn’t end there. “Another reason I like hiring more ICDC graduates is because of the people at the Job Placement Department. They are friendly and helpful. They’ll go out of their way to help you find a candidate,” Castro adds.

With such positive and supportive interest in one another, the Massage Company of Brentwood is a perfect environment to foster wellness and treatment for patients and employees alike. But for therapists like Weiss and Aguilar, it all started at ICDC College, where they learned to believe in themselves again and gain the skills that would bring them to a place they love working.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 08, 2011

Veterans Day falls on a special day this year, 11/11/11, but quite frankly each Veterans Day gives all Americans the extraordinary opportunity to honor our veteran men and women’s service and sacrifice to our country in ceremonies all across the nation.

ICDC College will host a special celebration in honor of all our heroes, including active military service members, veterans, and fallen soldiers at each of the college’s four campuses in Hollywood, Van Nuys, Huntington Park and South Bay.

The program will include a special flag installation ceremony to commemorate the college’s respect and gratitude for ICDC College’s students and alumni who have – and are presently – serving in the armed services. ICDC’s campus presidents will honor each veteran with a special certificate, thanking them for their service and heroism in protecting our country. ICDC College’s Homeland Security students will also take part in the services, as a special way to say thank you, from those who are being trained to become first responders, to those who fight to help keep our nation safe.

Representatives from ICDC College’s Department of Veterans and Military Affairs staff will also be on hand to congratulate the honorees and personally be on hand to thank all veterans for their service.

David Hall, ICDC College’s Regional Director reflects on why ICDC College is honored to continually serve the higher education needs of veteran students and graduates for over 15 years. Hall says, “ICDC College is honored to publicly acknowledge our veteran men and women heroes who have unselfishly given of themselves to fight for our country. Our institution stands committed to providing veterans not only advanced educational opportunities, but also helping them to transition into the workforce upon graduation.”

We encourage all of our readers to please take a moment and honor a veteran today!

This Halloween, ICDC College will be getting into the spirit of things by celebrations at each campus, and contests that will have you howling for more. This ICDC College tradition of costume-wearing and decorating classrooms will be one that continues to exist after 15 years, with each campus adding their own cultural flair to the celebration.

The Hollywood Main Campus, keeping things festive and academic, is going to have two costume contests: one for students and another for faculty and staff. And this campus already had a head start on their enthusiasm for Halloween, as they already had classrooms and offices decorated as haunted houses and cemeteries.

“We wanted to celebrate and have fun, but keep the focus on the new students that come in on Monday as well,” says the Hollywood Campus president.

ICDC College’s Huntington Park campus is taking a different approach. There will be a pumpkin-carving contest, and between the hours of 1 pm – 3 pm, students will be bringing their children to trick or treat in the offices. In addition, students can dress up, classrooms will be decorated, and most classes will be having potlucks.

“Last year each department dressed up in the same theme – Admissions as Greek gods, Financial Aid as dominoes, Front Desk as fairies, and Management as pirates,” says Huntington Park Campus president. “Students and staff loved the idea, so we are again dressing up in-sync within each department.”

At the South Bay campus, both the morning and evening students will participate in a costume contest and there will be class competitions for the best-decorated classroom.

Van Nuys will be having a classroom decorating contest and the class with the best decor wins a pizza party. The celebration will include hot dogs from Costco.

As for the Online Campus, student support staff will be dressing up and having a friendly costume contest competition and lots of treats.
