It’s amazing what we’re able to accomplish in 40 years. By the time we hit the middle of our lives, many of us have gotten married, had children, and made great friends that we wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. On top of that, we’ve entered the workforce. But what if there’s more? What if the typical midlife crisis we might feel at 40 can’t be cured by buying a fancy new sports car, but rather by making the right moves that set us up for the next phase of life?
For many, those moves are advancing your education to let your career blossom even more. Early in life, learning about an industry is what puts us on the path for a satisfying career. However, new technologies and information are always a reality, and in order to stay relevant, they must be learned quickly!
Midlife or not, additional education should always be embraced. If you don’t take the time to learn your industry’s latest information, then you may not get a raise or promotion, and your current role could even be given to someone who is willing to do what it takes to get ahead.
Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities for you to reach your potential, even if you’re firmly entrenched at your company. Going back to school can give you the additional skills you’ll want to better perform your job. Information changes frequently and it is up to you to stay current! Diplomas can be completed in as little as nine months, with more advanced degrees that can be completed in less than two years. Classes are also available online, 24/7, so you can blend your busy schedule with advancing your career.
Another option that can help you stay relevant in your industry is taking continuing education units (CEU). Many fields actually require additional certifications to stay licensed. Taking CEU is up to you, but if you don’t have the most up-to-date knowledge, you may not be able to continue to practice in your field.
So no matter how you decide to get ahead and stay ahead, just know that whether 40 is approaching, or can be seen from life’s rear-view mirror, it’s up to you to do what it takes to stay relevant!
