Happy first day of summer!!! This day is also known as the summer solstice, which is when the sun is at its highest point, making today the longest day of the year.

The beginning of summer marks nearly four months of fun, but that does not mean you can ignore other parts of your life. Last month, we covered how to eat healthy during all the barbecues and get-togethers that summer brings. But that is just the first thing to keep in mind.

With great weather, it can be tempting to blow off your ICDC College classes and hit the beach for an afternoon relaxing with friends. However, doing this even one time can result in getting behind in your coursework. Just remember, you don’t want to risk your future for anything, much less one day in the sun! There is plenty of time for everything, and if you work hard during the week, you’ll appreciate weekends with your friends that much more.

You also want to take care of your skin in the summer by wearing sunblock. The sun’s UV rays are very powerful, and even a few minutes without protection can result in getting burned. The longer you are in the sun, the higher SPF your sunblock should be. If you go swimming, make sure to reapply afterwards. Also, just because the morning weather is gloomy, don’t think you can’t get a sun burn!

Remember to also stay hydrated! Your body works hard in the sun, and if you add intense outdoor activities into the mix, you’ll sweat a lot. Make sure you drink a lot of water, and while soda might seem refreshing, it does little to replenish fluids in a healthy way. Being dehydrated also opens yourself up to getting sick – NOT what you want during summer!

Follow these tips, and you’ll be sure to have an amazing summer. Many ICDC College programs are online, which means you have some flexibility to schedule in fun. Just be safe, as sunburns can make something as simple as putting on clothes very painful. Also, stay hydrated, and don’t forget to eat right.

The whole point of summer is to enjoy it – and by following these tips, you’re on your way to doing so!
