The 2012 color of the year, PANTONE® 17-1463, otherwise known as Tangerine Tango, has been selected as this year’s favorite color choice amongst fashionistas and graphic designers. Tangerine Tango is a variant of orange that has a very warm, dramatic and seductive feeling that exudes an exotic, but friendly tone.

You’re probably asking yourself, just what exactly is a PANTONE and why don’t they just call it orange? Well, PANTONES are an industry standard set of colors that are identified by a series of numbers, rather than typical names. For example PANTONE 2985 C, would be used to identify the color Sky Blue. Since most people may have their own idea of what Sky Blue looks like, using this system of color management can let the designer or customer see exactly what “Sky Blue” is.

PANTONE Solid palettes are the most commonly used colors and they consist of 1,114 hues, used throughout the design industry. Over the years, orange has grown in popularity amongst designers and consumers. Its bright attention getting warmth has made it a favorite for cosmetics and clothing lines alike. This color choice is perfect for the fast approaching summertime weather.

For graphic designers, color theory and color balance are very important functions of the design process. At ICDC College, students can earn a diploma through the Graphic/Web Development program, and become immersed in the world of design. Students will learn the skills and techniques necessary to become a graphic designer and web developer. Instruction in composition, color management and layout, will prepare students for the demands of working for design agencies or going freelance.

ICDC College offers students the ability to train with the latest in designer tools. Students will become well versed in Adobe Illustrator®, Adobe Photoshop®, Adobe Flash® and HTML. Knowing what colors go with what, and how to manipulate them to garner an emotional response from the viewer, are essential skills within a designers understanding of design and function. The proper colors can instill moods of happiness and a sense of uniformity. The wrong color choices can completely turn-off a consumer and make a design look rushed and unprofessional.

For the aspiring designer, color theory is essential and should be taken seriously for those wanting to break into the world of fashion and design. Previous choices for PANTONE color of the year consisted of the 2011, PANTONE 18-2120 (Honeysuckle) and the 2010, PANTONE 15-5519 (Turquoise), respectively. These bold and vibrant colors were chosen to exude a sense of escape from everyday troubles, and the feeling of being uplifted. As you can see, designers were very careful to choose colors that would make everyday people feel happy. With so many colors to choose from, what PANTONE do you think would best represent 2013?
